FIREFIGHTER TESTING
The Canton Board of Fire and Police Commissioners will be testing for Original Appointment to the Fire Department. This testing creates a ranked list from which candidates are then hired for full-time positions.
Age of applicants: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application (May 29, 2026) or under 35 years of age at time of posting of the final hiring list unless otherwise exempt from such age limitation provided in Section 5/10-2.1-6 of the Illinois Fire and Police Commissioners Act.
Requirements: Applicants must possess a high school degree or G.E.D. equivalent, and hold a valid driver’s license. Upon offer of employment, candidate must possess a valid CPAT certification and must pass a polygraph, psychological exam, and medical exam.
Starting salary is $62,523. Benefit package includes comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage. Firefighters are covered by the Illinois Fire and Police Pension Fund.

Testing on Saturday, June 13 will include an Orientation, Written Test and an Oral Interview.

The Canton Fire Department consists of 15 sworn full-time firefighters serving our community of approximately 14,000 residents. The Fire Department responds to an average of 2700 calls annually. All firefighters are certified by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
