PRIMARY FUNCTION:  

 

The Commercial Driver Training Director oversees the general operations of the Commercial Driver Training Program (CDT).

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Teaches assigned classes according to the course syllabi and provides information to students concerning course content, requirements, periodic evaluation procedures, and attendance expectations.  
  2. Operates the Commercial Driver Training program within Illinois Community College Board (ICCB), federal, and state guidelines.
  3. Recommends instructional schedules. 
  4. Maintains placement and follow-up data on CDT students. 
  5. Maintains current CDL and Department of Transportation physical.
  6. Complies with the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) rules and regulations regarding the College’s Truck Driving Program
  7. Recruits, selects, orients, supervises and evaluates the Commercial Driving Training Program staff. 
  8. Enters data into the college's systems, including the college's administrative system, with a high level of accuracy, in a timely manner.
  9. Identifies and recommends part-time CDT instructors.
  10. Establishes and maintains appropriate schedules and hours for part-time instructors.
  11. Establishes and maintains adequate recruiting and advertising to ensure success to the CDT program.
  12. Establishes and maintains maintenance schedules for vehicles and equipment.
  13. Supervises and monitors students’ progress in all phases of the program.
  14. Recruits students in conjunction with the enrollment services office, which includes initiating correspondences to prospective students and developing advertising. 
  15. Promotes the Spoon River College Commercial Driver Training Program and related courses through community events and effective business relationships.
  16. Recommends textbooks, library books, and other instructional materials.
  17. Observes, supports, and enforces the policies of the College. 
  18. Protects the confidentiality, security, and permanency of records.
  19. Assists with the organization of and meets with the Occupational Programs Advisory Committee. 
  20. Attends approved professional development opportunities to remain up-to-date on technological advances.
  21. Prepares and files all correspondences with vendors, suppliers, and contracted facilities. 
  22. Appropriately manages multiple and competing priorities while working independently with a high level of initiative.
  23. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

This position supervises part-time instructors in the Commercial Driver Training Program.

  1. An associate’s degree in related field from a regionally accredited institution is required. A bachelor’s degree preferred.   A combination of education and work experience may substitute for required degree.
  2. Two years commercial work experience and knowledge of the trucking industry required.
  3. Community college or training experience is preferred.
  4. Successful completion of a drug test and background check is required.
  5. A current and valid Illinois State Commercial Driver’s License and valid driving privileges in bordering states are required.
  6. Must possess the ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, policies, procedures, and manuals; write routine correspondence; and speak effectively before groups.
  7. Must possess the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  8. Experience using Microsoft applications with a high degree of accuracy and personal computer skills is required.
  9. Ability to lift and/or carry up to fifty (50) pounds. 
  10. Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities; deal with conflict appropriately; withstand pressure and remain calm in tense situations, accurate; flexible; dependable; responsible; promotes teamwork; demonstrates a positive attitude is preferred.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT: The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

Physical demands for this position include the ability to regularly sit, use hands and fingers, talk and hear. Work environment may require the ability to lift and/or carry weight up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance.  Work environment may include: extremes in indoor and outdoor temperatures; potential physical risk related to moving mechanical equipment; exposure to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals; limited risk of electrical shock; and moderate to loud noise levels. This position requires standing, walking, reaching, stooping / kneeling.  Vision requirements for this position include close vision including the ability to view text from a computer monitor.  This position requires driving, the majority of which is within the College district.
