PRIMARY FUNCTION:  

 

The Adjunct Instructor for the CDL program is primarily responsible for providing an educational experience for students to learn the safe operation of semi-trailer trucks through the use of classroom instruction, behind the wheel training and actual driving performance on the road and in the yard/range. Part-time CDL Program instructors will be expected to spend most instructional time in the yard/range and on the road with students. This position may include some evening class instruction.

 

RESPONSIBILTIES:

  1. Facilitates CDL program lessons.
  2. Communicates and demonstrates truck driving skills and abilities to students.
  3. Maintains highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
  4. Keeps abreast of new information and developments in field of instruction.
  5. Drive, inspect and clean trucks periodically.
  6. Recommend service for trucks when needed.
  7. Maintains professional skills through regular professional development, and other activities appropriate to higher education faculty.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 


 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.   1. Minimum of 2 years current related work experience is required.  
  2. A current and valid Class A CDL Illinois driver’s license with a clear motor vehicle record to check (per the college’s definition of an authorized driver) is required.
  3. Associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution is preferred.  
  4. Demonstrated ability to use technology in teaching is required. 
  5. Must have demonstrated teaching competence in field of instruction.
  6. Familiarity with basic online academic technology, such as Canvas is preferred.
  7. Experience in teaching in field of instruction is preferred.  
  8. Two years of college teaching with community college experience in field of instruction is preferred.
  9. Knowledge of mechanical aspects of tractor/trailers and DOT rules and regulations.
  10. Ability to relate to students and assist them to increase retention and student success.
  11. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  12. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and professional working relationships with others.

Physical demands for this position include the ability to regularly sit, use hands and fingers, talk and hear. Work environment may require the ability to lift and/or carry weight up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance.  Work environment may include: extremes in indoor and outdoor temperatures; potential physical risk related to moving mechanical equipment; exposure to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals; limited risk of electrical shock; and moderate to loud noise levels. This position requires standing, walking, reaching, stooping / kneeling.  Vision requirements for this position include close vision including the ability to view text from a computer monitor.  This position requires driving, the majority of which is within the College district.
